Sarah Kabot
Works on Paper
April 2 – May 29, 2021
Public openings during Walk All Over Waterloo
April 2 & May 7th, 6-8pm, or by appointment

In a new set of collages, Sarah Kabot continues her exploration of the complexities of information received through traditional printed newspapers. Collecting Sunday papers from both the New York Times and the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Kabot cuts away sections of journalistic images from one page revealing counterpart images or text on the next visible page. This spontaneous combination results in a collapsing of space between events, geographic locations and cultures. Marked only by date, the viewer has the experience of piecing together contexts and content, decoding world events through dual images. The collages are original works as well as an integral preparatory step for larger digital prints some of which will be presented later in 2021.

In addition to the collages, Kabot will present two drawings on Duralar paper, October 5th, which consider the experience of grieving during COVID times. The drawings mark the commemoration of her father’s passing before we were forced to experience grief in isolation.

Kabot’s work has shown nationally and abroad, at institutions including The Suburban (IL), SPACES Gallery (OH), Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MI), the Akron Museum of Art (OH), the Museum of Contemporary Art (OH), the Drawing Center (NY), the Peabody Essex Museum (MA), and Tegnerforbundet in Norway. Sarah has been the recipient of several grants and prizes including a Cleveland Arts Prize for Mid-Career artist in 2017, a 2016 Creative Workforce Fellowship, and several Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Awards. Her work is held in public and private collections nationwide. Public Art projects include permanent installations in the Cuyahoga County Library system, the Avenue District in downtown Cleveland, and a collaborative project with her design partner, Marianne Desmarais, at the Westin in downtown Cleveland. Kabot and Desmarais are currently in production on a project for the Cleveland Clinic Main Campus. She is currently Associate Professor and Chair of the Drawing Department at the Cleveland Institute of Art in Ohio.
